Dashboard Confessional/Andrew Mcmahon in the wilderness: LIVE AND ON TOUR

One of the small joys in this line of work is getting to design a gig poster for a new client. It’s great to work with bands poster after poster and pickup where we left off on the last poster, but there’s something exciting about figuring out how to represent music on paper for the first time. On this particular project I had to design for two acts who were co-headlining a tour: Dashboard Confessional and Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness.

We ended up landing on this concept depicting the entryway table to a young musicians first New York City apartment in the 90s. It’s such a specific sounding description, but we edited heavily and removed indicators and items that were on the table and kept things simple.

The phonebook is packed with little easter eggs referencing the tour, the musicians, and their songs. I don’t like drawing meaningless detail, I like to either leave a space empty or fill it with meaning.

Below is the original sketch sent to the client. The concept had a bit of a different vibe in the beginning, but we changed the era of the objects to better suit the era of the bands.
