Matt Mays

I’ve been listening to Matt Mays’ music since I was a little kid. And naturally as I was learning how to design, illustrate, and screenprint, I had it in my mind that one day I would do work for one of my favourite songwriters and performers out there. Surprisingly, it didn’t take too long. We’ve been working together since 2012 to create posters, shirts, artwork for singles, and more.

Be sure to check out the section of my portfolio dedicated specifically to posters for Matt’s annual set of shows at the Shore Club.

I always try to make the posters feel as special as the shows themselves. Like I said, there’s an energy at these shows that you don’t find at just any old show. There’s people BBQing and swimming outside before hand, playing guitar at the nearby beach until sunrise, people sleeping in tents and their cars, it’s like a festival with only one band playing. And I want some of that magic, that anticipation, that lifestyle aspect of the Shore Club shows to come across in the artwork.

Because Matt’s Shore Club stint is such a favourite time of year for me, it’s such a tradition at this point, and it’s got such a dedicated following, the screenprinted artwork often involves some advanced printmaking techniques that I tend not to break out too often. Like split fountains of colour for the skies, several transparent grey layers to build up shading and sculpting, and many many more colours than a typical poster of mine.

It really is this iconic of an event. If you have a chance to make it to a show, be sure to take it!

Check out the shop for posters from years past that are still available for sale, and be sure to check out the section on all the other work I’ve done for Matt over the years.
